President Paul Kagame has issued a firm warning that Rwanda will defend itself against any threat, stressing that the country will never again allow a repeat of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Speaking at the launch of the 32nd commemoration, Kagame reaffirmed that Rwanda’s history is an established truth that cannot be distorted, cautioning against genocide denial and attempts to rewrite events. He emphasized that the facts of what happened in 1994 are well documented and rooted in the lived experience of Rwandans.
“Ibyo twumvise byose bifite aho bishingiye, ni ukuri,” Kagame said, underscoring that efforts to manipulate such history are both difficult and misguided.
Reflecting on Rwanda’s past, Kagame noted that although the country endured one of the darkest chapters in its history, it has since rebuilt and transformed. He stressed that the conditions that enabled the genocide have fundamentally changed and will not be allowed to re-emerge.
Delivering a strong message on national resilience, Kagame warned that Rwanda will not be subjected to repeated destruction, insisting that neither current nor future generations will allow such atrocities to happen again.
“Ntushobora kwica abantu kabiri… ntabwo bishoboka,” he said, reinforcing the country’s determination to safeguard its people and its progress.
His remarks come as Rwanda and the international community continue commemorating the Genocide against the Tutsi, a period dedicated to honoring victims, preserving historical truth, and strengthening the fight against genocide ideology.
Commemoration activities are ongoing nationwide, with a focus on unity, resilience, and ensuring that the lessons of history remain central to Rwanda’s future.
