Police in Burera District are searching for a man suspected of killing his wife following a domestic dispute, local authorities said on Tuesday.

The suspect, Habumuremyi Jean Baptiste, a resident of Nemba Sector, allegedly assaulted his wife, Hagenimana Jeannette, aged about 30, before fleeing the scene.

The incident occurred on the night of Sunday, January 18, 2026, in Rushara Cell, Cyave Village.

The victim was later rushed for medical care but died on January 20, 2026, authorities said.

The Executive Secretary of Rushara Cell, Théogène Bimenyimana, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect escaped immediately after the attack.

He said preliminary information suggests the violence may have been linked to alcohol abuse.

“The couple had a history of domestic conflicts,” Bimenyimana said, adding that investigations are ongoing to locate the suspect and establish the full circumstances surrounding the case.

Local leaders have urged residents to report domestic disputes early to prevent them from escalating into violence.

The burial of the deceased is scheduled for Wednesday, January 21, 2026.
