Burundi retains military presence in DRC amid rising violence

The Burundian government has confirmed that its troops deployed in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) will remain in place, stating that their mission is ongoing.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Édouard Bizimana said the forces are in Congo to protect Burundi’s borders and citizens, while accusing Rwanda of violating recent peace agreements by allegedly attacking Burundian troops.

Analysts, however, say recent heavy fighting in South Kivu was mainly caused by Burundian troops targeting the AFC/M23 rebel group, which controls key areas and defended its positions.

Earlier this week, Burundian forces launched operations in Kamanyola and other sectors, including Katogota, Rurambo, Luberizi, Luvungi, Mutalule, Bwegera, Nyakabere, and Sange, alongside the FARDC and allied local forces.

The December 4 clashes left several Burundian soldiers dead, including the commander Lt. Col. Athanase Minani.

The fighting also triggered civilian displacement, with many fleeing to Rwanda as troops retreated from contested areas.
