Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire has challenged Rwanda’s men’s national handball team to aim for competitive success at the 2026 Africa Handball Cup of Nations, stressing that the country’s role should go beyond hosting the continental tournament.
Mukazayire made the remarks on Thursday, January 15, 2026, during a meeting with the national team ahead of the championship, which will be held in Kigali from January 21 to 31 at BK Arena and Petit Stade.
“Hosting is an honor, but we also have a team capable of competing,” the minister said, urging the players to target a strong finish rather than mere participation as hosts.
She described handball as a priority sport with long-term potential, saying sustained investment and strong performances could position Rwanda among Africa’s top handball nations and future contenders for the World Championship.

Mukazayire also called on the players to show passion, discipline, and national pride, reminding them that they will be representing the entire country and will have the backing of Rwandan fans throughout the tournament.
Rwanda national team captain Peter Kwisanga said the squad is fully fit and motivated, confirming that the players are ready for the challenge. He noted that the team’s immediate objective is to progress beyond the group stage and secure a place among the top eight teams, after which they will reassess their ambitions.
The 27th Africa Handball Cup of Nations will feature 16 teams. Hosts Rwanda are drawn in Group A alongside Zambia, Nigeria, and Algeria, setting up a competitive opening phase for the Kigali tournament.
