Rwanda’s Minister of Finance and Economic Planning, Yusuf Murangwa, has announced that construction of the new Kigali University Teaching Hospital (CHUK) is nearly complete and that the hospital will relocate from its current location to Masaka in March 2026.

He made the announcement while presenting the revised 2025/2026 national budget to members of Parliament on Thursday, February 12, 2026.

Minister Murangwa said that construction of the Masaka site is 98% complete and confirmed that the relocation will take place in phases starting in March, with the process expected to continue until September.

“These are very large facilities, much bigger than the current CHUK. We had 400 beds before, but here we will have over 800. This requires modern equipment and more staff than we currently have. Based on the advice we received, the hospital cannot relocate all at once; some services will move first while others continue at the current CHUK to ensure continuity,” he explained.

He added, “This is a carefully planned process. We expect to begin phased relocation in March and continue through September. Some services, such as maternity care, may remain temporarily at the current CHUK before fully moving. By the end of this year, the relocation should be complete.”

Construction work has now been completed, with finishing touches, cleaning, and landscaping underway.

The project is being built by China’s Shanghai Construction Group Co. Ltd at an estimated cost of 85 billion Rwandan francs.

The master plan shows that the hospital will feature three patient towers, including a five-story main building, alongside research facilities, teaching spaces, and other specialized structures.
