Rwanda National Police has reported that three people were killed in 14 road accidents recorded in the Eastern Province during the 2025 end-of-year festive season.
The figures were released on Friday, 9 January 2025, during the ongoing Tugendane Tugereyo Amahoro road safety awareness campaign in Kayonza District, an initiative aimed at promoting responsible road use and reducing traffic accidents.
According to police data, the accidents occurred between 20 December 2025 and 9 January 2025. Bugesera District recorded the highest number of accidents with six cases, followed by Kayonza District with four, while Nyagatare, Ngoma, Rwamagana, Kirehe, and Gatsibo districts each registered one accident.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Commissioner of Police Vincent Sano, urged motorists to exercise greater caution, noting that road accidents have far-reaching consequences.
He said that losing lives in road accidents means losing family providers, national resources, and overall development.
The Minister of Internal Security, Vincent Biruta, also called for vigilance among all road users, emphasizing shared responsibility on the road.
He said all road users, including drivers, motorcyclists, and cyclists, must do everything possible to reach their destinations safely while ensuring the safety of others.
The minister further urged the public to cooperate with traffic police officers conducting routine checks, saying their presence on the roads is meant to save lives and help people reach their destinations safely.
The Rwanda National Police reported a 2 percent reduction in road accidents in 2025 compared to 2024, adding that most accident offenders fall within the 22 to 35 age group.
The Tugendane Tugereyo Amahoro road safety campaign was launched on 7 November 2025 and has since been conducted in Rubavu, Kamonyi, Musanze, Kayonza, and across the City of Kigali.
