Eid al-Fitr: Prayer, gratitude, charity and love at the heart of the Muslim celebration

Eid al-Fitr, often referred to as the “small Eid,” is one of the most significant celebrations in Islam, marking the end of fasting and the conclusion of the holy month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset for 29 or 30 days.

The festival falls on the first day of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and its exact date is determined by the sighting of the new crescent moon. If the moon is sighted on the 29th night of Ramadan, Eid is celebrated the following day; otherwise, it is observed a day later.

Eid al-Fitr is a moment of deep gratitude, as Muslims thank Allah for granting them the strength to complete the رمضان fast.

On the day itself, Muslims gather early in the morning for special congregational prayers known as Salat al-Eid, often held in open grounds, large mosques, or stadiums to accommodate large crowds.

Teachings of the Prophet Muhammad emphasize that Muslims should wear their best and cleanest clothes on Eid—preferably new garments—as part of the Sunnah.

Before attending prayers, those who are able are required to give Zakat al-Fitr, a form of charity given in food or money to support the less privileged so they too can partake in the celebrations.

After prayers, families, friends, and neighbors come together to share meals, exchange visits, and celebrate in a spirit of unity and joy.

Eid al-Fitr is widely regarded as a time of happiness, forgiveness, and strengthened community bonds among Muslims.

The celebration comes immediately after Ramadan, a month that is one of the five pillars of Islam. It is also believed to be the period during which the first verses of the holy book, the Qur’an, were revealed to the Prophet Muhammad. As a result, recitation and reflection on the Qur’an are especially emphasized throughout the month.

On the first day of the month of Shawwal, Muslims around the world celebrate Eid al-Fitr.
