Minister of Local Government, Dominique Habimana, has urged Rwandans to take collective responsibility in confronting genocide ideology, warning that its persistence remains a threat to national unity and stability.

He made the call while joining residents of Kamonyi District in Mugina Sector for the 32nd commemoration of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

The event drew local leaders, residents, and families who lost relatives during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Addressing mourners, Habimana said the genocide was rooted in bad leadership that promoted division and discrimination, eventually culminating in the systematic extermination of Tutsi.

He said commemoration provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of good governance, urging citizens to actively safeguard unity and peaceful coexistence.

The minister warned that although the perpetrators were defeated, remnants of genocide ideology persist, often spread through denial and distortion of history.

He called on both young and old to remain vigilant and reject such narratives, emphasizing that the fight against genocide ideology requires the involvement of every Rwandan.

The event also saw the dignified burial of 35 victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi, whose remains were laid to rest at Mugina Genocide Memorial, where more than 59,000 victims are buried.
