A 28-year-old man from Rusasa Village in Huye’s Gishubi Sector is facing criminal charges after allegedly killing his 40-year-old brother over a minor debt of just 250 Rwandan Francs (about $0.20).
The incident occurred on December 31, 2025, at their father’s home, where the brothers had been drinking.
Prosecutors say the suspect demanded the small sum for work he had done, but his brother said he had no money, sparking a heated argument that quickly turned violent.
According to authorities, the suspect struck his brother in the chest with a chair, causing him to fall. The victim was rushed to a local hospital but died later that evening.
The suspect has reportedly apologized, claiming he did not intend to kill his brother.
Rwanda’s Public Prosecution Office has charged him with intentionally causing bodily harm that led to death, an offense under Article 11 of Law No. 059/2023, which governs crimes and penalties in the country.
