President Paul Kagame has reiterated to Rwandans and the global community that the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi was a premeditated and systematically executed atrocity, not a sudden or accidental event.
Speaking at the launch of the 32nd commemoration of the genocide, Kagame warned against attempts to distort history by portraying the killings as spontaneous or a response to immediate conflicts. He emphasized that the genocide was meticulously organized and carried out openly, with the world watching.
The President highlighted that denial of the genocide often begins long before the killings, through ignoring early warning signs and spreading hateful rhetoric that escalates into violence.
Kagame also underscored the importance of survivor testimony, noting that it serves as a critical lesson against denial and revisionism. He reaffirmed that the history of the genocide is unchangeable and those who attempt to deny it face an undeniable truth.
He further stressed Rwanda’s resilience, noting that the nation has rebuilt itself and transformed its painful past, ensuring that such atrocities will never recur on Rwandan soil.
