President Paul Kagame has met with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for talks centred on strengthening bilateral relations and enhancing peace and security in the Great Lakes region.
The meeting took place at Village Urugwiro during Gen. Muhoozi’s two-day working visit to Rwanda.
In a statement, the Office of the President said the discussions focused on the “strong relations between Rwanda and Uganda” as well as regional peace and security, underscoring continued efforts by the two neighbours to deepen cooperation.
Gen. Muhoozi arrived in Kigali on July 25 and was received by Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Mubarakh Muganga, accompanied by Maj. Gen. Willy Rwagasana, Commander of the Republican Guard.
His visit is aimed at reinforcing defence cooperation and sustaining military-to-military engagement between Rwanda and Uganda, whose relations have improved significantly in recent years following a period of diplomatic tensions.
The Ugandan army chief last visited Rwanda in March 2025, when he held talks with senior Rwanda Defence Force commanders on bilateral military cooperation and toured the Rwanda Military Academy in Nyakinama, Musanze District.
The latest high-level meeting reflects ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen security collaboration and promote stability across the region.
