Kamonyi: Four die after suspected poisoning from alcohol consumed at a local ceremony
Four people have died in Kamonyi District, Rukoma Sector, after consuming alcohol suspected to have been contaminated during a local ceremony. Several others were rushed to hospital.
The incident occurred on Sunday, December 28, 2025, in Gishyeshye Cell, Rukoma Sector. Friends had gathered at the home of a man who was preparing to host a local baptism-related ceremony scheduled to take place over the following three days.
Three of those who drank the suspected alcohol died on Monday, December 29, 2025, while a fourth person passed away the following day.
Two other victims are currently receiving treatment at Remera–Rukoma Hospital. The bodies of the deceased were transported to Kigali for forensic examination at the Rwanda Forensic Institute (RFI).
The Mayor of Kamonyi District, Dr. Nahayo Sylvere, confirmed that the deaths were linked to the alcohol consumed, though he emphasized that investigations are still ongoing.
“We are continuing to follow up to establish all the facts. However, medical professionals have confirmed that the alcohol they consumed is the cause of death, while investigations are still underway,” he said.
Two people have been arrested in connection with the incident, including the wife of the late Eric, as investigations into the deaths continue.
