The Commander of the Rwanda Land Force, Vincent Nyakarundi, on February 26, 2026, commenced a working visit to Cabo Delgado Province in Mozambique, where Rwandan security forces are supporting counter-terrorism operations.
During his visit to Pemba, the provincial capital, Maj Gen Nyakarundi and his delegation held high-level talks with André Rafael Mahunguane, Commander of the Mozambique Armed Defence Forces (FADM) Land Force.
The discussions centred on assessing the prevailing security situation in Cabo Delgado and reviewing forthcoming joint military operations. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening operational coordination and deepening bilateral military cooperation to achieve shared security objectives.
The Rwandan delegation also met with Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo, who provided an update on the province’s security landscape. The meeting examined ongoing joint efforts by Rwandan and Mozambican forces in combating terrorism and explored additional strategies to consolidate stability across the region.
Maj Gen Nyakarundi commended the strong partnership between the two countries’ security institutions, noting that their professionalism, resilience and sacrifice have significantly contributed to restoring peace and normalcy in Cabo Delgado.
He reiterated Rwanda’s commitment to supporting Mozambique’s efforts to ensure sustained security and stability throughout the province.
In response, Maj Gen Mahunguane praised the decisive role played by Rwandan forces in counter-terrorism operations, underscoring the value of continued collaboration between the two nations.
Both parties reaffirmed their shared resolve to safeguard lasting peace, security and stability for the people of Mozambique and the wider region.
As part of his tour, Maj Gen Nyakarundi visited Mocímboa da Praia, the headquarters of Rwandan security forces in Cabo Delgado. Addressing the troops and police officers stationed there, he conveyed a message from Paul Kagame, President of Rwanda and Commander-in-Chief of the Rwanda Defence Force, commending them for their bravery, discipline and dedication to duty.
He urged the personnel to remain vigilant and uphold the highest standards of professionalism, stressing that discipline remains the cornerstone of mission success as they continue supporting Mozambique in counter-terrorism operations and broader security stabilisation efforts.
