Meteo Rwanda warns of heavy rainfall, potential disasters in March

Meteo Rwanda has warned that Rwanda is likely to experience above-normal rainfall in March 2026, which could lead to disasters in several parts of the country.

According to the national meteorological agency, rainfall expected this month will be slightly above the long-term average for March, increasing soil moisture levels across different regions.

The forecast indicates that between 100 and 350 millimeters of rain could fall during the first and second parts of March, which is slightly higher than the typical rainfall recorded during the same period.

The agency noted that the rains are expected to positively support agricultural activities, particularly at the start of Season B (Itumba). However, strong winds and thunderstorms may also occur and could trigger disasters, especially in areas where the soil has already become saturated due to continued rainfall.

In a statement, Meteo Rwanda said the expected rainfall will benefit farming activities since the country is entering the Itumba growing season, but cautioned that heavy winds and thunderstorms could cause damage in some areas where the ground is already waterlogged.

For the last part of the month, from March 21 to 31, rainfall is expected to return to near-normal levels, ranging between 89 and 292 millimeters.

Daytime temperatures during March are projected to range between 21°C and 30°C, while nighttime temperatures are expected to fall between 10°C and 18°C.

Moderate winds, occasionally becoming strong, are also expected across different parts of the country, with speeds estimated between 4 and 12 meters per second.

The agency also noted that rainfall recorded in February 2026 was above the average, which disrupted some farming activities such as harvesting and crop storage, and triggered disasters in several parts of the country.
