Rwanda’s Minister of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Dr. Jean Damascène Bizimana, has underscored the role played by sections of the media in the planning and execution of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
He made the remarks during a commemoration event held at the Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA) to honor journalists and former ORINFOR staff who were killed during the Genocide.
The event brought together government officials, media professionals, and families of victims, including Ibuka President Dr. Philbert Gakwenzire.
Bizimana said some media outlets at the time propagated hate speech and genocide ideology through broadcasts and publications that incited violence against Tutsi.
“Killings can be carried out through words and writings—that is where it begins,” he said, emphasizing the power of media in shaping public perception.
The annual commemoration serves to honor fallen journalists while reinforcing the responsibility of the media to promote unity, truth, and peace.
