The Military Medical Insurance (MMI) has donated five cows to genocide survivors in Kamonyi District as part of efforts to support their socio-economic recovery and contribute to commemoration activities marking the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The support was handed over on June 17, 2026, during a remembrance event held at the Mugina Genocide Memorial, where MMI staff also paid tribute to victims buried at the site.

In addition to the livestock donation, MMI provided 150 copies of a book titled Legacy for Youth to three schools in Mugina Sector. The publications are aimed at helping students better understand Rwanda’s history and the consequences of the genocide.

MMI Director General, Col (Rtd) Dr. King R. Kayondo, said commemoration serves as a moment to reflect on the country’s tragic past, during which more than one million Tutsi were killed as a result of divisive leadership and genocidal ideology.

He said the donation of cows is intended to support survivors’ livelihoods through dairy production and strengthen their path toward self-reliance.

Kamonyi District Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, Uziel Niyongira, commended MMI for the gesture, noting that such support contributes to improving the welfare of survivors and promoting education among young people.

One of the beneficiaries, Mukamanzi Pelagie, expressed appreciation for the assistance, saying the cow will help improve her household income and support her ongoing efforts to rebuild her life.
