The Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA) has announced that rehabilitation and expansion works on the Nyange-Muhanga road section have reached 91.5% completion, bringing the wider Muhanga-Karongi highway upgrade project closer to completion.
The agency disclosed the update on May 26, 2026, noting that the 24-kilometre Nyange-Muhanga section is now in its final phase of construction.
The project forms part of the ongoing rehabilitation and widening of the Muhanga-Karongi highway, a major transport corridor linking Rwanda’s Western and Southern provinces to the City of Kigali.
RTDA said the other sections of the road — Rubengera-Rambura and Rambura-Nyange — have already been completed.
The 15.15-kilometre Rubengera-Rambura section was constructed with financing from the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD), while the 22-kilometre Rambura-Nyange section was completed with support from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD).
In July 2021, the Government of Rwanda signed a $15 million loan agreement with the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development to support rehabilitation and widening works on part of the highway.
The Muhanga-Karongi road stretches over 128 kilometres and has been in service for more than two decades, with some sections completed in 2000 and others in 2002.
RTDA says roads built in Rwanda are generally designed to last at least 20 years when properly constructed, although some can remain operational for up to 30 years with adequate maintenance.
The highway is considered strategically important to Rwanda’s economy, facilitating movement of goods and people between Kigali and the Western Province, while also supporting tourism activities in districts including Karongi District, Rutsiro District and Nyamasheke District.
