In Nyanza District, the Rwandan prosecution reached an agreement with Jeannine Umukunzi, who was charged in connection with the death of a community health worker.

On February 5, 2026, in the Nyanza Sector, Busasamana Cell, in the area known as “Kuri 40,” 61-year-old health worker Mukakabera Drocella tragically died. Reports indicate that while standing, she was pushed by 25-year-old Jeannine Umukunzi, causing her to fall. Bystanders rushed her to Nyanza Hospital, but she later succumbed to her injuries.

Following the incident, the Rwanda Investigation Bureau arrested Umukunzi, charging her with voluntary assault resulting in death. During investigations and proceedings, Umukunzi admitted that she had pushed Mukakabera Drocella, which led to her death, and stated that the act was unintentional.

The prosecution and Umukunzi reached a plea agreement. In the Huye Intermediate Court, when the judge asked if the accused had reached an understanding with the prosecution, the prosecutor confirmed that the agreement stipulated a five-year prison sentence, with three years to be served, two years suspended, along with a fine of 750,000 FRW.

Umukunzi confirmed the arrangement in court while holding her child. The court approved the agreement, noting that the victim’s family has the right to claim compensation and that the decision is not subject to appeal. The judge also highlighted that plea agreements are granted to first-time offenders.
