Two health workers in Nyanza District have been arrested following the death of a patient who was reportedly denied timely care due to administrative errors.
The suspects, employed at Busoro Health Center in Masangano Cell, Busoro Sector, are currently held at the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) station in Busasamana as authorities continue their investigation.
According to reports, the patient, a young man, sought treatment at the health center but was turned away because of discrepancies in his community-based health insurance (Mutuelle) registration. He was advised to resolve the issue at the local administrative office. Upon arriving, he reportedly found the office closed and, due to his deteriorating condition, returned home without receiving care. He later died.
The arrests follow an inquiry by district authorities, highlighting concerns over accountability and service standards in public health facilities.
Nadine Kayitesi, Nyanza District Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, confirmed the detention of the health workers, stating that they are under investigation for alleged misconduct in handling the patient.
This incident comes amid heightened scrutiny of health service delivery in Rwanda, particularly regarding delays or denial of treatment linked to administrative procedures. It serves as a reminder of the critical importance of patient-centered care and proper management in health facilities.
