Rwanda has welcomed 64 families, totaling more than 200 Rwandans, who voluntarily returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
They were received on Thursday morning, March 12, 2026, at the La Corniche OSBP border, before being transported to the Kijote Transit Centre in Nyabihu District.
Ishimwe Pacifique, Rubavu District Deputy Mayor in charge of social affairs, welcomed the returnees, urging them to contribute to the country’s development through hard work. He also encouraged them to behave responsibly in their new communities, avoid spreading rumors, and seek guidance from local authorities whenever they encounter challenges.
In their testimonies, the returnees said they were motivated and guided by fellow Rwandans who had returned earlier, receiving information about the reception process and support available to help them reintegrate and improve their lives.
The repatriation initiative follows decisions made during a meeting between Rwanda, the DRC, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on July 24, 2025.
