The Rwanda National Police has called on motorists, especially motorcyclists, to strictly respect the dedicated bus lane system introduced in parts of Kigali, warning that continued violations are undermining efforts to improve public transport efficiency.
Police spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga said the bus-priority lanes are designed to ensure faster movement of public transport during peak hours and improve overall urban mobility in the capital.
The system gives exclusive access to buses during morning and evening rush hours, while other vehicles are expected to use alternative lanes or roads. Authorities say the measure has already contributed to reduced travel time for commuters.
However, police and transport operators report growing concern over motorcyclists entering the restricted lanes, a practice that is causing congestion and raising safety risks for passengers and drivers.
Public transport operators say the unauthorized use of bus lanes is disrupting traffic flow, with drivers warning that sudden motorcycle movements into the lanes create dangerous situations and delays.
ACP Rutikanga reiterated that the rules apply to all road users without exception, stressing that motorcyclists are among those most frequently observed violating the directive.
He warned that enforcement measures, including penalties, will be applied against persistent offenders as authorities move to ensure compliance and protect the efficiency of the system.
City authorities say the bus priority initiative is part of broader efforts to ease congestion in Kigali, promote the use of public transport, and reduce reliance on private vehicles amid rising fuel costs.
