Construction works to expand the busy Prince House–Giporoso–Masaka road corridor will start in February 2026, the City of Kigali has announced, in a project aimed at easing chronic traffic congestion on one of the city’s key arteries.
Kigali Mayor Samuel Dusengiyumva made the announcement on Wednesday evening, January 21, during a media briefing reviewing the city’s 2025 performance and outlining priority infrastructure projects for 2026.
The 10.3-kilometre road will be upgraded from a two-lane to a four-lane carriageway, with the addition of a 1.3-kilometre elevated section designed to improve traffic flow at congestion hotspots.
According to city officials, the road will run from Prince House in Remera, near the junction linking Amahoro Stadium to the main highway, to Cyamitsingi in Gasabo District, where it connects roads leading to Kigali International Airport and Masaka.
At Cyamitsingi, the project will include four roadways—two at ground level and two elevated—each with two lanes. A second section, measuring about nine kilometres, will extend from Cyamitsingi to Masaka Hospital, also as a dual carriageway with two lanes in each direction.
Mayor Dusengiyumva said the process of compensating residents affected by the project is already underway.
“The Prince House–Masaka road will be upgraded starting in February. We are relocating residents in line with the law. The expansion will help reduce traffic congestion along this corridor,” he said.
The road upgrade has been in planning for several years. In June 2019, the Government of Rwanda and the Government of China signed a RWF 54 billion financing agreement to support the project. City authorities now estimate the total cost of the expansion at more than RWF 86 billion.
Once completed, the project is expected to significantly improve mobility between eastern Kigali, the airport zone, and the fast-growing Masaka area, which has experienced rising traffic volumes in recent years.
