A 29-year-old man from Kanama Sector in Rubavu District has been found dead in what authorities suspect was a case of suicide, local officials have confirmed.
The deceased, identified as Jean Baptiste Tuyishime, was discovered on Sunday in Bikuka village, Mahoko cell, in Rwanda’s Western Province, after several days during which he had not been seen.
The Executive Secretary of Kanama Sector, Evariste Nzabahimana, told Umunota that the man had been living alone and was last seen on Thursday evening.
“Residents noticed that his house appeared closed on Friday, but when it seemed open again on Saturday, they assumed he had stepped out and did not enter,” Nzabahimana said.
It was not until Sunday that residents entered the house, where they found him dead. Authorities believe he may have taken his own life, though investigations are ongoing.
Nzabahimana said the deceased was married but had separated from his wife.
He urged residents to remain vigilant and report concerns early, especially when they notice unusual behaviour or prolonged absence.
“People should share information in time and inform local authorities whenever they encounter challenges, so that support can be provided and tragic decisions like suicide can be prevented,” he said.
Local authorities have called on communities to promote openness, mutual support, and timely communication to help prevent similar incidents.
