The Mayor of Rubavu District, Prosper Mulindwa, has called on residents to begin 2026 with a strong commitment to financial discipline as a foundation for security and sustainable development.
He made the appeal during a community assembly held on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, in Bugeshi Sector, attended by local leaders and security officials from the Western Province.
Mayor Mulindwa urged residents to avoid wasteful spending, manage household resources responsibly, and set clear, achievable goals for the new year, noting that financial discipline plays a critical role in improving livelihoods and strengthening community stability.
He also warned against drug abuse, domestic conflicts, and other illegal activities, encouraging residents to cooperate with authorities by providing timely information, which he said is essential to maintaining public order and promoting long-term development.
Addressing the meeting, Rwanda Defence Force representative Col. Sesonga reminded residents that security begins at the community level, calling on citizens to distance themselves from activities that threaten public safety, including drug trafficking, smuggling, and family disputes. He further cautioned against harboring or collaborating with terrorist groups, emphasizing the importance of sharing information with security organs.
The Western Province Police Commander highlighted the negative impact of smuggling and illegal cross-border trade on the national economy and household welfare. He warned against unlawful border crossings, theft, and violence, urging residents to build peaceful and law-abiding families.
The community assembly also provided a platform for residents to raise concerns and share views, with leaders pledging swift responses and closer collaboration with local authorities.
During the event, five families received cows under the Girinka (One Cow per Poor Family) program, a government initiative aimed at reducing poverty and improving household livelihoods.
