Rwanda and Japan have expressed their commitment to further strengthening relations and cooperation between the two countries, particularly in development sectors and areas of mutual interest.
The commitment was reiterated on the evening of September 30, 2026, when Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, received Misako Takahashi, Director-General for African Affairs at Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Their discussions focused on ways to further strengthen bilateral relations and expand cooperation in various sectors.
Cooperation between the two countries already covers areas including education, infrastructure, agriculture, energy, water and sanitation, technology, and workforce development. The Embassy of Rwanda in Japan says the partnership is also expanding into the areas of economic cooperation, trade and investment.
This year, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) highlighted that Rwanda-Japan cooperation, which has lasted for more than 20 years, has supported various initiatives, including improving access to clean water, agriculture, education and infrastructure.
Rwanda-Japan diplomatic relations, which began in 1962, have grown stronger through cooperation in economic development and people-to-people exchanges. In 2027, the two countries will mark 65 years of diplomatic relations.
