Rwanda’s men’s national volleyball team defeated Nigeria 3-1 on Wednesday to advance to the playoff for fifth and sixth place at the African Volleyball Championship in Tunis, Tunisia.
Rwanda entered the placement matches after being eliminated by hosts Tunisia in the quarter-finals, where the North African side secured a place in the semi-finals.
Facing Nigeria, who had also been knocked out in the quarter-finals after a 3-2 defeat to Morocco, Rwanda made a strong start and took control of the match.
Rwanda won the opening set 25-23 before extending their advantage with a 25-20 victory in the second set.
Nigeria responded in the third set, putting Rwanda under pressure and taking it 25-18 to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Rwanda, however, regained their composure in the fourth set and closed out the match with a 25-19 win, securing a 3-1 victory.
The result sends Rwanda into the fifth-place playoff, where they will face the winner of the match between Ghana and Egypt. The loser of that encounter will meet Nigeria in the seventh-place playoff.
