Rwanda discover opponents in FIBA U18 AfroBasket Zone 5 qualifiers

Rwanda’s U18 boys’ national basketball team will face hosts Egypt and Tanzania in Group A of the FIBA U18 AfroBasket 2026 Zone 5 Qualifiers, while the girls’ team has been drawn to play Tanzania, Egypt and Kenya in the race for continental qualification.

The draw was conducted during the tournament’s technical meeting on Thursday, July 23, ahead of the qualifiers in Cairo, Egypt.

The boys’ competition features six teams split into two groups of three. Rwanda, Egypt and Tanzania make up Group A, while Uganda, South Sudan and Kenya were drawn into Group B.

Action tips off on Friday, July 24, with Uganda taking on South Sudan at 3:30 p.m., before Egypt face Tanzania at 6:00 p.m.

Rwanda’s boys begin their campaign on Saturday, July 25, against Tanzania at 7:30 p.m.

In the girls’ competition, the four participating teams will compete in a single round-robin format. Rwanda open their campaign against Tanzania on Friday at 1:00 p.m. Kigali time, while hosts Egypt face Kenya later in the day at 8:30 p.m.

The Zone 5 qualifiers will determine the region’s representatives at the 2026 FIBA U18 AfroBasket, scheduled to take place in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from August 5 to 16. Only the winners of the boys’ and girls’ tournaments will qualify for the continental championship.
