Rwanda and Morocco have convened the first meeting of their Joint Military Cooperation Commission, marking a new step in strengthening defence ties between the two countries.

The meeting is underway in Rabat, the capital of Morocco, from January 18 to 22, 2026. Rwanda is represented by officials from the Ministry of Defence and the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF), led by Brigadier General Patrick Karuretwa, Director General for International Military Cooperation.

According to a statement shared by the Rwanda Defence Force on X, the talks are aimed at deepening cooperation between the RDF and the Royal Armed Forces of Morocco in areas of mutual interest, in line with the military cooperation agreement signed by the two countries in June 2025.

Rwanda and Morocco maintain strong diplomatic relations, with both countries hosting embassies in each other’s capitals.

Rwanda opened its embassy in Morocco in 2019, while Morocco operates an embassy in Kigali.

In addition to defence cooperation, the two countries collaborate in several other sectors, including agriculture, where they share expertise and exchange specialists.

Other areas of cooperation include water management and irrigation, promotion of investment, improved access to agricultural financing, and plans to invest in a fertilizer plant adapted to Rwanda’s soil conditions.
