The Rwanda National Police (RNP) has issued a renewed call to motorists to immediately give way to ambulances responding to emergencies, warning that failure to do so violates traffic laws and puts lives at risk.

The appeal was made under the “Tanga Inzira” public awareness campaign, launched to reinforce the broader road safety initiative, “Turindane Tugereyo Amahoro”, which promotes shared responsibility among all road users.

Speaking during the campaign, RNP spokesperson ACP Boniface Rutikanga emphasized that allowing ambulances free passage is not a matter of personal choice but a legal obligation for every motorist.

“Giving way to an ambulance is not optional or subject to interpretation. It is a legal requirement that must be respected immediately and without hesitation,” ACP Rutikanga said.

The campaign also calls on drivers to respect lanes designated for public buses, a measure aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing delays for commuters.

Police noted that the initiative aligns with the City of Kigali’s ongoing road expansion and modernization program, intended to ease congestion and improve safety for all road users.
