Rwanda Polytechnic (RP) has launched new aviation-focused training programs, signaling a major step in equipping youth with practical skills aligned with the country’s expanding air transport, logistics, and tourism sectors.

State Minister in the Ministry of Education, Claudette Irere, emphasized that Rwanda continues to prioritize Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a key driver for employment creation and national development. She made the remarks on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, during the launch ceremony at Rwanda Polytechnic, Kigali College.

The newly introduced courses cover airport operations, aviation services, cargo handling, and supply chain management. They are designed to provide students with hands-on, job-ready skills that meet the demands of a rapidly growing sector.

“Investing in these programs gives our youth meaningful employment opportunities while contributing to Rwanda’s broader development goals,” Minister Irere said. “As air transport, logistics, and tourism continue to grow, it is essential that our young workforce is ready to capitalize on these opportunities.”

The programs were developed in partnership with the World Bank Group through the Priority Skills for Growth and Youth Empowerment Project, ensuring that the curriculum aligns with labor market needs.

Meskerem Mulatu, World Bank Education Specialist for Eastern and Southern Africa, highlighted that Rwanda’s progress depends on a skilled workforce, adding that modern, market-driven training equips students to secure jobs and drive economic growth.

The aviation industry also welcomed the initiative. Patrick Nkulikiyimfura, Chief Executive Officer of Akagera Aviation, noted that the sector requires professionals with both technical expertise and customer service skills. He said the programs will bridge the gap between education and industry requirements, preparing graduates to contribute immediately to the workforce.

As part of the launch, RP unveiled modern training facilities, including an Airport Simulator Workshop and a Smart Classroom—both firsts in Rwanda. These tools replicate real airport operations, allowing students to practice passenger handling, ground operations, and in-flight services in a realistic setting.

Sylvie Mucyo, Vice Chancellor of RP, stressed that the goal is to provide high-quality, industry-relevant education. She added that practical exposure ensures graduates leave with the competencies demanded by employers.

Enrollment in the programs is rising, reflecting growing confidence in TVET pathways. The launch coincides with ongoing strategic investments, including the construction of Bugesera International Airport, positioning Rwanda as a regional hub for aviation, trade, and tourism, and underscoring the critical need for skilled personnel in the sector.
