The Rwanda National Police has announced that 130 people were killed by natural disasters in 2025, while 1,800 houses were destroyed across the country.

The figures were presented on Friday, 5 December 2025, during a joint press briefing held by the Rwanda National Police and the Rwanda Investigation Bureau, where officials reviewed the country’s overall security situation for the year.

CP George Rumanzi, commissioner for operations and public order, said the general crime rate had declined compared to 2024.

He explained that crime fell by 15.7 percent, attributing the improvement to strengthened operations against drug trafficking and violent offences.

The briefing also highlighted the heavy toll of natural disasters. Police said the 130 deaths recorded this year were caused by incidents that included lightning strikes and mining-related accidents.

In addition, 1,800 homes were destroyed, 1,100 hectares of crops were damaged and more than 100 livestock were lost.

Inspector General of Police, CG Felix Namuhoranye, underscored the importance of cooperation between the police and the media, particularly during the festive season when criminal activity tends to rise.

He said the country’s security remained stable overall, but warned that offenders often take advantage of end-of-year events, concerts and celebrations.

He urged the public to observe safety measures, especially by avoiding drunk driving, noting that celebrations can quickly turn tragic when safety is ignored.

Namuhoranye added that police officers will remain vigilant and will not tolerate attempts to disrupt public order, calling on citizens to enjoy the festive period responsibly and return home safely.
