Security situation remains calm during festive season – ACP Rutikanga

The leadership of the Rwanda National Police has assured the public that security will remain stable as people celebrate Christmas and New Year festivities.

With only a few hours left before Christmas celebrations marking the birth of Jesus Christ—considered a special day by Christians—families traditionally come together to share meals, take children out, buy them new items, and enjoy leisure activities.

However, authorities note that periods of heightened entertainment and social activities can also create opportunities for security disturbances if precautions are not taken.

Speaking to Rwanda Broadcasting Agency (RBA), the Police Spokesperson, ACP Boniface Rutikanga, said the police are fully prepared to ensure that people celebrate the festive season safely.

“What I can assure Rwandans is that security is good. I urge everyone to remain calm and feel safe; there is no reason for concern,” ACP Rutikanga said.

He added that as the country enters the festive period, police officers who normally work in offices will be deployed on the ground to reinforce security operations.

“As we enter these celebrations, we are increasing our presence to support our colleagues in the field so that we can ensure security and safeguard public freedom everywhere. This will allow everyone who wants to celebrate to do so safely,” he said.

ACP Rutikanga emphasized that regulations governing entertainment venues, including noise control measures, must be strictly observed. He also reminded the public to be mindful of children, who also deserve to enjoy the festive season in a safe environment.

He urged parents to closely supervise their children during the holidays and called on motorists to avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.

“Someone wrote on social media that in Rwanda, drinking alcohol is allowed, and driving is allowed if you have a valid license. What is not allowed is drinking alcohol and then driving,” he said.
“You must choose one: drink and do not drive, or drive and do not drink.”

The Rwanda National Police notes that during festive periods, crimes related to excessive alcohol consumption and violence tend to increase, hence the need for vigilance.

Kigali City in festive mood

The City of Kigali has also confirmed that preparations for the festive season are in advanced stages, promising celebrations that will be more vibrant than in previous years.

The City Spokesperson, Emma Claudine Ntirenganya, said the capital is fully ready and already buzzing with activities.

“The City of Kigali is ready for the festive season. The city is lively. At this time, Kigali is more vibrant than usual. Various individuals and groups have organized entertainment activities. Beyond organized events, families are also hosting friends in their homes and celebrating together,” she said.

She added that the city has made extra efforts to organize extended celebrations.

“As the City of Kigali, we have gone further in our preparations. We have organized activities spanning ten days, from Wednesday, December 24, 2025, to January 2, 2026. These will include various concerts held at the Kigali Convention Center,” she said.

The City of Kigali says the festivities will include Christmas movie screenings, music concerts, family outings, and social gatherings, all aimed at celebrating Christmas and New Year in a joyful and safe atmosphere.
