Six prisoners were injured after a vehicle transporting 40 inmates from Nyarugenge Prison to Huye Prison was involved in a road crash near the Ruliba industrial area in Nyarugenge District.
The accident occurred at around 9 a.m. on September 12, 2026.
CSP Hillary Sengabo, spokesperson for the Rwanda Correctional Service (RCS), confirmed that six of the 40 prisoners sustained injuries.
Four of the injured prisoners were taken to Nyarugenge Hospital for treatment, while the other two did not require hospital care.
The driver reportedly said the accident was caused by brake failure.
However, RCS said an investigation is underway to establish the exact cause of the crash and determine whether a brake problem was responsible.
No injuries were reported among the other prisoners.
