Ambassador Moses Rugema officially presented his letters of credence to the Director of Protocol at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Nigeria, Ambassador Wahab Adekola Akande, formally authorizing him to represent Rwanda in the country.

The ceremony took place on Thursday, March 12, 2026, and highlighted both countries’ commitment to deepening diplomatic and economic relations.

During the meeting, the two ambassadors discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation across trade, technology, security, and education, emphasizing the mutual interest in expanding bilateral ties.

Ambassador Rugema was appointed Rwanda’s envoy to Nigeria on September 18, 2025, with his nomination confirmed by the Senate on September 30, 2025. He brings extensive diplomatic experience, having served at Rwanda’s embassy in the United Kingdom from 2004 to 2007 and as First Counsellor at Rwanda’s embassy in Switzerland. Prior to this posting, he was Rwanda’s Chief of Protocol at the Office of the President from 2020 to 2025.

Rwanda and Nigeria maintain robust collaboration, including student exchange programs and aviation links, with Rwanda’s national carrier, RwandAir, operating flights to Nigeria. Nigerian investors are also active in Rwanda, particularly in technology and energy sectors.

The two countries have strengthened their economic partnership in recent years, signing a technology cooperation agreement in 2022 and a double taxation elimination deal on June 27, 2025, aimed at boosting investment, supporting private sector engagement, and fostering African collaboration.

Ambassador Rugema’s accreditation marks a renewed commitment to advancing Rwanda-Nigeria relations and expanding opportunities for bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors.
