AFC/M23 returns to Kateku and Kanune in Walikale

Fighters from the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) have returned to the areas of Kateku and Kanune in Walikale Territory, North Kivu, after leaving the zones just two days earlier. Their return on Saturday, March 28, 2026, has raised concerns among local residents.

In Kanune, the fighters re-entered with all their military equipment via Miriki in Lubero Territory. Those who had left Kateku following a local militia attack also came back from Buleusa, the administrative center of Ikobo Groupement, where they had temporarily sought refuge.

Reports indicate that the brief takeover of Kateku by local militias occurred without clashes. In Kanune, no group had maintained control since AFC/M23 left on March 26, leaving the area largely unguarded.

Residents, many of whom had begun returning to their homes after weeks of displacement, are now anxious. The renewed presence of armed fighters has deepened uncertainty, with fears that clashes could erupt again between AFC/M23 and local militias.

The reasons behind the fighters’ swift return remain unclear. Analysts suggest it may be a strategic move to reinforce key positions, while others point to possible pressure from international actors and ongoing peace efforts in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
