President Paul Kagame has visited Diamond Trading Company Botswana, one of the world’s most advanced diamond sorting and valuation facilities, during his ongoing working visit to Botswana.
The visit took place on Thursday as part of President Kagame’s two-day official trip to the southern African nation, accompanied by senior Rwandan officials.
Located in Gaborone, DTC Botswana is globally recognised for its advanced technology in sorting, grading, and valuing rough diamonds before they are sold on international markets.
The facility has the capacity to process up to 45 million carats of diamonds annually, making it one of the largest diamond valuation centres worldwide.
The company was established to increase the value of diamonds mined in Botswana before export, supporting the country’s broader strategy of local beneficiation and industrial development.
DTC Botswana is jointly owned by the Government of Botswana and De Beers Group, the multinational diamond company founded in 1888.
Botswana remains Africa’s leading diamond producer and ranks second globally after Russia in overall diamond production.
The country is also recognised for producing some of the world’s highest-quality diamonds and drew international attention in 2024 following the discovery of a 2,492-carat diamond, one of the largest ever found globally.
President Kagame’s visit comes as Rwanda and Botswana continue strengthening cooperation in trade, investment, and economic transformation through a series of bilateral agreements signed during the visit.
