A total of 160 officers from the Rwanda National Police serving under the Rwanda Formed Police Unit One-10 (RWAFPU1-10) in the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have been awarded UN service medals in recognition of their professionalism, discipline and commitment to civilian protection during their 10-month deployment.

The medal award ceremony was held on Thursday in Malakal and attended by senior government officials, security leaders and United Nations representatives led by Alfred Orono Orono, head of the UN mission in the area.

Speaking at the event, Orono praised the Rwandan contingent for its exceptional contribution to peacekeeping efforts and the protection of civilians in conflict-affected communities.

“The United Nations medal awarded today is a recognition of your tireless service, professionalism and unwavering commitment to peacekeeping responsibilities day and night. The UN highly appreciates your role in advancing sustainable peace in South Sudan,” he said.

Orono further commended the officers for their contribution to security operations that supported the closure of the Malakal civilian protection camp and facilitated the safe return of displaced residents to their communities.

ACP Corneille Murigo, commander of RWAFPU1-10, described the recognition as a major milestone and a testament to the unit’s dedication to international peacekeeping duties.

“This recognition reflects the resilience, commitment and professionalism demonstrated by RWAFPU1-10 in fulfilling the United Nations mandate to protect civilians. It motivates us to continue serving with excellence,” he said.

Murigo also thanked the leadership of United Nations Mission in South Sudan for its continued support, as well as partners who contributed to the success of the unit’s operations.

Rwanda began deploying police officers to peacekeeping missions in South Sudan in 2015 and currently has more than 400 officers serving in Juba and Malakal.

Beyond security operations, Rwandan peacekeepers are also engaged in community outreach initiatives aimed at strengthening ties with local residents. Their activities include community service, school rehabilitation, distribution of mosquito nets, provision of school materials to vulnerable children, and support for disadvantaged families through healthcare and access to clean water.
