The AFC/M23 coalition has expressed deep concern over rising insecurity in South Kivu, alleging that Congolese government forces are committing systematic violence against civilians.
In a statement released on social media by Lawrence Kanyuka, head of communications for AFC/M23, the group highlighted widespread abuses against vulnerable populations, including women, children, and the elderly in Minembwe, Mikenge, and Karingi. The coalition claims these attacks involve FARDC forces working with allied groups such as Wazalendo, foreign militias, and the FDLR.
AFC/M23 criticized international organizations and human rights bodies for failing to take meaningful action, despite these abuses constituting serious violations of international humanitarian law.
The coalition further warned that the attacks appear to be part of a deliberate strategy by the Kinshasa government to destabilize local communities, a move that could threaten broader regional security in the Great Lakes area.
The coalition also noted that ongoing military operations violate ceasefire agreements signed in Doha and Washington, undermining previous peace efforts that had offered hope to affected populations.
AFC/M23 urged regional governments, international bodies, and institutions responsible for international justice to intervene immediately, protect civilians, and hold perpetrators accountable, stressing that continued inaction would leave those responsible for these atrocities unpunished
