Canadian authorities have arrested a 68-year-old Rwandan man suspected of involvement in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, after he allegedly lived in Canada for nearly three decades under a false identity.
The suspect was detained on June 22, 2026, at a Canadian airport upon returning from abroad, according to CBC News. He is said to have been living in Canada since 1996 using fraudulent identity documents while being subject to an international arrest warrant issued by Rwanda.
Following his arrest, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) carried out a search of his residence in Ottawa, where investigators reportedly seized documents, electronic devices, and other materials considered relevant to the ongoing investigation.
The RCMP said the case dates back to December 2021, when its integrated border enforcement unit launched an investigation after receiving intelligence on suspected identity fraud and immigration violations.
Authorities later established that the suspect had allegedly concealed his identity for years while evading international prosecution linked to genocide-related allegations.
Canadian officials confirmed that he is facing 16 charges under immigration and border services laws, including misrepresentation, identity fraud, and the use of forged documents to maintain residency in Canada.
While the current prosecution focuses on immigration offences, the RCMP said investigations into the genocide-related allegations are continuing in coordination with international partners.
The arrest is part of ongoing global efforts by Rwanda and its partners to track down and bring to justice individuals suspected of participating in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
