Arikiyepiskopi wa Kigali, Antoine Cardinal Kambanda, who is also the President of the Conference of Catholic Bishops in Rwanda, has travelled to Cameroon to join local faithful in welcoming Pope Leo XIV on his pastoral visit to Africa.
The Pope’s apostolic journey began in Algeria, where he spent two days meeting with Catholic faithful and other communities, delivering messages centered on peace, love, and justice.
During the second day of his visit, Pope Leo XIV travelled to the city of Annaba, a historic center of Christianity, where he visited the Basilica of St. Augustine.
In his address, the Pope emphasized that God’s heart is saddened by war, violence, injustice, and falsehood, while remaining close to the humble and those who work for peace.
He stressed the urgent need for people committed to building peace and resisting divisions in society.
While in Annaba, Pope Leo XIV also celebrated Mass at the basilica, urging Christians to remain “the light and salt of the world,” especially in today’s challenging global context.
Following his visit to Algeria, the Pope arrived in Cameroon, where he was welcomed by a large gathering of faithful and Church leaders, including Cardinal Kambanda.
The pontiff is expected to continue his pastoral visit to other countries, including Angola and Equatorial Guinea, where he will carry a message focused on peace, unity, and reconciliation.
