Congolese refugees in Kigali protest violence at foreign embassies

Share with Others

Kigali-based Congolese refugees held a peaceful march on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, targeting several foreign embassies in Rwanda to condemn ongoing violence and hate speech in Eastern Congo.

The demonstration began near the United States Embassy, where participants delivered a statement urging the international community to take swift action to halt abuses against Kinyarwanda-speaking Congolese. Organizers emphasized that such violence continues to threaten peace and stability across the Great Lakes region.

Following the U.S. Embassy, the march appeared set to continue toward other embassies in Kigali, reinforcing the protesters’ call for urgent international intervention.

The demonstration reflects growing frustration among refugees over persistent attacks and discrimination in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, highlighting the broader humanitarian and security concerns in the region.
