The construction of the Byumba–Ngondore road, which is being upgraded with an asphalt surface, has reached 67.4% completion, according to the Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA).
The 11.7-kilometre road connects Byumba town to Ngondore, where it joins the route leading to the Gatuna border crossing between Rwanda and Uganda.
The project also includes the construction of several other roads within Gicumbi town, including routes leading to schools, Gicumbi Market, commercial areas and Gicumbi Stadium. The roads will also be fitted with street lighting.
The Byumba–Ngondore road is being constructed as an additional component of the wider rehabilitation of the 51.5-kilometre Base–Gicumbi–Rukomo road, which has already been completed.
Residents of Gicumbi District say the new road will make travel and transportation easier, improve trade and create more opportunities for local traders and farmers.
They expect the road to strengthen connections between communities in Gicumbi, other parts of the country and areas near the Gatuna border.
Residents recall that travelling in the area was difficult before the road upgrade, particularly during the rainy season. Its poor condition made it difficult for vehicles to use, increasing transport costs and journey times. In some cases, motorists had to take longer routes through Rukomo.
The road construction programme in Byumba town covers a total of 15.53 kilometres.
The Byumba–Ngondore road, listed in the project details as measuring 11.17 kilometres, is expected to be completed in December 2026. Construction progress is currently reported at approximately 68%.
The road works are part of an infrastructure development project valued at more than $20 million.
The road is expected to play an important role in improving transport and connecting Byumba town to the highway leading to the Gatuna border.
The Byumba road development project, which includes the Byumba–Ngondore route, is among the infrastructure initiatives aimed at improving connectivity in the area.
