A Congolese journalist, Daniel Michombero, has come under heavy criticism and online ridicule after mistakenly identifying Rwandan singer Yampano as a senior official within the AFC/M23 alliance.
Michombero, known for his outspoken political commentary, made the allegation on his X (formerly Twitter) account, claiming he had obtained explicit videos involving individuals linked to AFC/M23 leadership.
He initially alleged that he had seen compromising footage involving senior figures within the group, including office and finance officials. The claims were later widely discredited after no evidence was provided to support them.
He later posted further allegations targeting another supposed AFC/M23 figure linked to mining taxation in Rubaya, Masisi Territory, describing explicit content in detail.
However, social media users quickly identified the content as unrelated, pointing out that the material being referenced was actually a circulating video featuring singer Yampano and his partner, not any political or military figure.
The error triggered widespread backlash online, with users accusing the journalist of spreading misinformation and relying on unverified content in politically sensitive reporting.
Michombero, who operates in eastern DR Congo, has previously faced criticism over claims seen as targeting AFC/M23, further fueling debate over media credibility and conflict reporting in the region.
