Former Rwamagana District Mayor Uwimana Nehemie has died after a prolonged illness, the leadership of Muhazi United Football Club has confirmed.
Uwimana, who led Rwamagana District from 2010 to 2014, also served as First Vice President of Muhazi United, where he was regarded as a key figure in the club’s development and football growth in the region.
He passed away in the early hours of Saturday, May 2, 2026, at Kanombe Military Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment for over a month.
Muhazi United President Nkaka Longin said the club was informed of his passing by his family early Saturday morning, following weeks of hospitalization.
“He had been admitted at Kanombe Hospital for more than a month. His passing was communicated to us by his wife this morning,” Nkaka said.
Beyond his political career, Uwimana was widely recognized for his long-standing contribution to football development in Rwamagana and beyond. He played a significant role in the transformation of the club from its earlier identity as Rwamagana City to Muhazi United, supporting its ambitions to reach the top flight.
Club officials described him as a committed leader and mentor who consistently advised on football development and youth talent promotion.
“He was an important advisor to the club, very experienced in football, and deeply committed to its progress,” Nkaka added.
Uwimana’s passing is seen as a major loss for both local leadership and the sporting community in Eastern Province, where he left a lasting legacy in public service and football development.
