Students and residents around Busogo University in Musanze District have raised concerns over a series of alleged armed robberies targeting people along roads near the institution.

The attacks are reportedly carried out by groups of individuals who hide in dark areas around the university, ambushing students returning from classes and stealing valuables such as mobile phones and laptops. Some victims say they have also sustained injuries during the incidents.

One student who recently survived an attack said he was confronted by several people who assaulted him and attempted to steal his belongings, leaving him with injuries on his hand.

The incidents have left some students fearful of moving around the area at night, with many saying the insecurity is affecting their daily routines and academic life.

“We are worried because some students no longer feel safe returning home late in the evening,” one student said.

Another student said the situation was affecting their ability to concentrate on their studies, as they remain concerned about their safety while travelling between campus and their residences.

Local traders operating near the university have also reported changing their working hours, saying they now close earlier due to safety concerns.

A trader said businesses that previously remained open until late evening are now forced to shut down earlier.

Northern Province Police spokesperson CIP Ignace Ngirabakunzi confirmed that authorities are aware of the reported incidents and said investigations are ongoing. He added that two suspects linked to the attacks have already been arrested.

Police have urged residents and students to cooperate with security organs by reporting suspicious activities and providing information that can help prevent crime.

Authorities say additional measures are being taken to improve security around the university and ensure students and residents can move freely without fear.
