President Paul Kagame has congratulated his counterpart, Denis Sassou Nguesso, on his re-election as President of the Republic of the Congo following polls held earlier this month.

In a message posted on X, Kagame wished Sassou Nguesso success in his new term and reaffirmed Rwanda’s commitment to strengthening longstanding bilateral ties and cooperation between the two countries.

“We highly value the strong relations between our nations and look forward to deepening our close cooperation in advancing shared priorities and improving the welfare and development of our people,” Kagame said.

The March 15, 2026 election saw Sassou Nguesso secure a landslide victory with 94.82 percent of the vote, extending his decades-long leadership.

The two leaders share longstanding diplomatic ties anchored in cooperation between Rwanda and the Republic of the Congo.

During Sassou Nguesso’s visit to Rwanda in July 2023, Kagame awarded him a national honour in recognition of his contribution to Africa’s development. As a further symbol of close ties, Kagame also gifted him traditional Inyambo cows at his farm in Kibugabuga, Bugesera District—an enduring cultural gesture signifying friendship and mutual respect.

Beyond leadership relations, Rwanda and the Republic of the Congo maintain cooperation in key sectors including agriculture, mining and air transport. National carrier RwandAir has operated flights between Kigali and Brazzaville since 2011, facilitating trade and connectivity.
