Kawempe Muslim Ladies of Uganda secured the CECAFA women’s title in Rwanda after defeating Kenya Police Bullets 1-0 in the final, booking the region’s place at the CAF Women’s Champions League.
Agnes Nabukenya scored the decisive goal in the 100th minute after the final had ended goalless in regulation time, giving Kawempe their first regional title.
The victory also ended Uganda’s wait for a CECAFA women’s championship title and confirmed Kawempe Muslim as the region’s representative in the continental competition.
Kenya Police Bullets finished runners-up, while Commercial Bank of Ethiopia claimed third place after beating South Sudan’s Yei Joint Stars 6-1.
The tournament produced a strong attacking display, with 63 goals scored across 16 matches, an average of almost four goals per game.
CBE recorded the biggest win of the tournament, defeating Djibouti’s FC Ujeco 11-0, while Rayon Sports and Mafunzo SC of Zanzibar played out the only goalless draw.
CBE finished as the tournament’s highest-scoring team with 17 goals. Ujeco and Eritrea’s Denden WFC failed to score.
Kawempe Muslim stood out defensively, finishing the tournament without conceding a goal while scoring 13.
Rayon Sports, Rwanda’s representative after winning the domestic title, were eliminated in the group stage. The result ended Rwanda’s hopes of having a home team qualify for the continental stage.
Despite the early exit, Rayon Sports had entered the tournament with a strong record, having reached the final in the previous edition.
The tournament also produced individual awards, with Nabukenya named Player of the Tournament, CBE’s Emush Daniel Dandamo taking the top-scorer award with six goals and Kawempe goalkeeper Saidah Namwanje being recognised as the best goalkeeper.
Yei Joint Stars received the Fair Play Award.
For Kawempe Muslim, the victory marked a breakthrough on the regional stage. For Rwanda, the tournament provided a major platform for women’s club football, while the early elimination of Rayon Sports highlighted the growing competitiveness of the CECAFA region.
