Residents of Gasabo and Rulindo districts have welcomed the ongoing construction of the Nyacyonga–Mukoto road, a project first pledged by President Paul Kagame in 2014, saying it is set to transform mobility and boost economic activity between the two districts.
Works to upgrade the 36-kilometre stretch to asphalt standard are currently progressing, marking a key milestone in the long-awaited infrastructure project aimed at improving regional connectivity.
Local residents say the road will significantly ease transport challenges that previously affected daily movement and trade, particularly for those travelling to and from Kigali City. Many noted that reliance on motorcycles had made travel costly, a burden they expect to end once the project is completed.
Traders and community members have also expressed optimism, saying the improved road network will facilitate faster transportation of goods to markets and strengthen livelihoods across the area.
The Nyacyonga–Mukoto road spans 36 kilometres, with construction having started in August 2024 and expected to take 36 months. The project is estimated to cost around $36 million.
It passes through Jabana Sector in Gasabo District and Masoro, Murambi, Cyinzuzi, Mbogo, Ngoma, and Bushoki sectors in Rulindo District. Once completed, it will connect two major national highways linking Kigali to Gicumbi and Kigali to Musanze–Rubavu.
