Police in Nyanza District have arrested a secondary school Dean of Studies (DoS) over allegations of fraud and misappropriation of funds estimated at more than Rwf150 million.
The suspect is currently detained at the Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) station in Busasamana, while authorities have also launched a search for his wife, who is suspected to have been involved in the alleged offences.
According to preliminary information, the man served as Dean of Studies at one of the schools in Nyanza District.
Investigations indicate that the couple is accused of taking out loans which they failed to repay, issuing bounced cheques, and defaulting on payments related to a house they had constructed and lived in. The total amount linked to the alleged fraudulent activities is said to exceed Rwf150 million.
The complaints were reportedly filed by several individuals who had lent money to the suspect and his wife.
The couple is said to reside in Kavumu Cell of Busasamana Sector in Nyanza District. Sources indicate that the wife fled shortly after reports emerged that she could also face arrest alongside her husband.
Further information suggests that after leaving the country, the woman sent a text message to her husband informing him that she had departed. In the message, she reportedly thanked him for the time they had spent together before her phone became unreachable.
The spokesperson for Rwanda National Police in the Southern Province, Hassan Kamanzi, confirmed the arrest, noting that the suspect’s case file has already been submitted to prosecutors for further legal action.
“Police arrested him and handed him over to investigators,” he said.
Police have urged the public to refrain from engaging in illegal activities, warning that anyone found committing offences will be arrested and held accountable in accordance with the law.
