The mayor of Bugesera district, Richard Mutabazi, expressed his excitement at hosting the second stage of the Tour du Rwanda in his district.
Riders set off from Nyamata in Bugesera district, heading to Huye over a distance of 134.6 kilometers. The route used the new road connecting Bugesera and Nyanza, passing through Kamabuye and Ruhuha, before turning onto Gasoro in Nyanza and continuing toward Huye.
Mayor Mutabazi said it is an honor for the district to host this stage of the race.
“Bugesera is ready for Tour du Rwanda 2026,” he said. “Having the second stage start in Nyamata carries great significance for us. This is the road given to us by his excellency the president of the republic. Normally, we use it daily, but having the Tour pass through it will delight our residents, increase the district’s prestige, and showcase our scenic beauty.”
Mayor Mutabazi highlighted the opportunity to promote tourism and the natural attractions of the district.
“Bugesera has many beautiful sites. Welcoming an international event here is very exciting. Cycling in Bugesera is truly unique. Many local women and girls ride bikes, and residents use bicycles in daily activities. Seeing professional cyclists ride through will resonate with this local tradition. People are eager to witness how experts handle this sport,” he added.
Israeli rider Itamar Einhorn of the NSN Development Team took the lead in Bugesera, wearing the yellow jersey awarded to the race leader, and won the first stage yesterday.
Bugesera district is home to nine lakes, the Rwandan International College of Agriculture (RICA), the Bugesera Special Economic Zone, Ntare Louise School, and the Bugesera International Airport.
